Art in Ibiza: exhibitions at Hotel Anfora

Once again, art will be coming to our hotel in Es Canar this summer in the way of new exhibitions in the common areas of our lobby and lounge bar. Whether you're staying with us or just visiting Es Canar, come to Hotel Ánfora and discover the work of our chosen artists for 2024.

Art exhibitions this summer 2024

From this month until the end of season, five national and international artists will display their creations at Hotel Ánfora, including a permanent sample of the sculptures made by the well-known Ibizan sculptor Antonio Hormigo.

May: Jordi Juan

The first exhibition to open the art events season at Hotel Ánfora will be available from 31 May and will bring together a selection of works made by this Ibizan artist who uses the Japanese technique known as sumi-e or ink wash painting. This technique stems from the Zen school of Buddhism and is a journey in search of inner peace and the appreciation of natural beauty through the relationship between Chinese ink, the brush and paper. This may look simple at first sight, but this technique requires great skills in the brush strokes, the pressure applied and the amount of ink used, and it’s through these elements that this sumi-e artist expresses himself.

June: José Antonio Martin Santos

Born in Salamanca but living in Ibiza since 1995, José Antonio Martin Santos expresses himself through figurative or realistic painting reminiscent of the Impressionist artists, with loose, sketchy strokes. His work, always full of light, usually portray Ibizan landscapes. You’ll be able to view a sample of his works at Hotel Ánfora from 7th to 30th June.

July: Ezequiel Herrera

This Argentinian artist, who now lives in Ibiza, is committed to shedding light on the realities of an ever-changing society. His work philosophy is against waste, which means that Ezequiel Herrera’s art is sustainable, using recycled materials while raising awareness about sustainability. Hotel Ánfora will host the women-centred exhibition “Gama atmosférica” (Atmospheric Range), from 5th to 31st July.

August: María García de Leonardo

Sand, marble, mica and different building materials are used by this Valencia-born painter as the base for her work, with a strong focus on the sea. The Mediterranean Sea, with its wide range of hues depending on the shore and depth, is shown to the viewer from above, full of light and texture.

Antonio Hormigo Escandell: permanent exhibition in 2024

This summer, Hotel Ánfora has the honour of hosting and displaying for our guests a sample of A. Hormigo’s art, the most important sculptor in the history of Ibiza, with a hugely prolific career that includes hundreds of exhibitions in Spain and abroad. His work is part of the island’s art legacy and is on display in the Museu d’Art Contemporani d’Eivissa, as well as other public and cultural spaces. Born on the island, this self-taught artist knew how to create unique sculptures based on mythology and observing Ibiza’s nature, on land and in the sea. In fact, it was the random shape of pieces of wood that determined his work and that’s the enigma of his sculptures, with the added merit of having never killed a tree to create his art.

To learn more about this extraordinary Ibizan artist, we recommend you read this post, where you will also learn about the sculptures of his nephew Pedro Juan Hormigo, the most important iron-casting artist in Ibiza. If you're staying at Hotel Ánfora this summer, don’t miss our permanent summer display! And if you’re visiting Es Canar, come to our hotel for a cocktail in the lounge bar and discover Antonio Hormigo’s work.
