Ibiza: art, gatherings and avant-garde streams
In the early 30s, Ibiza became a safe haven for European artists who fled from Nazism, such as Walter Benjamin, Erwin Broner and Raoul Haussmann. Other intellectuals and creators were fascinated by the beauty and ethnographic and architectonic wealth of the island, starting a creative flow of avant-garde streams that acquired its own character in the following decades. The collection exhibited by the Contemporary Art Museum of Ibiza is good proof of this, with avant-garde works created in Ibiza in the 60s and 70s, an intensive creative moment that coincided with the inflow of hippies to the island.
Along the lines of last summer, when we began our exhibitions, Hotel Ánfora wants to pay tribute to those years of exchanges with a cycle of four painting exhibitions that will be open to the public for you to enjoy during your stay at our hotel or your visit to Es Canar.
Art exhibitions at Hotel Ánfora Ibiza 2022
From 25th April until 4th September, four national and international artists will exhibit their work on the walls of our 4-start hotel in Es Canar. The first artist to open these exhibitions is Josefina Torres, who will be displaying a selection of her last works in May.
May: Josefina Torres
The first exhibition on our art calendar at Hotel Ánfora will be available until 27th May and will gather a selection of 3D works from the two most successful series created by this Ibiza-born painter around the concept of cracks and breaks. Josefina Torres, who is also a poet, has a long career in art that stands out for its creative world of extreme refinement and lyrical intentions.
June: Sarah Main
Born in Sidney, Sarah Main is a versatile artist who has divided her creativity between painting and electronic music. Living in Ibiza for the past 20 years, her work reflects the two decades she worked as a DJ for Pacha, with colourful and vibrant creations that aim to help the public reconnect with art and music. Her abstract works will be displayed in Hotel Ánfora from 1st to 30th June, so if you’re in Ibiza at the time, don’t miss it!
July: Patricia Boned
This Ibiza-born artist who trained at Escola Massana in Barcelona fills her figurative works with femininity. Free of idealised beauty and painted in bright colours, Boned’s women appear imperfect, monobrowed (synophris) or with sagging breasts, happy, tired, dreamers or poetically linked to the island through hairdos in the shape of prickly pears. When can you come and see it at Hotel Ánfora? From 10th July till 3rd August.
August: Philip Stanton
Illustrator, designer, university lecturer and plastic artists, this versatile American who lives in Barcelona is known for his colourful works influenced by Picasso and Matisse, two of the artists Stanton most admires. If you’re in Ibiza between 12th August and 4th September, don’t miss this exhibition displayed in the common areas of Hotel Ánfora. Philip Stanton is a well-known artist and some of his most remarkable works are the spectacular art installations in the Barcelona Aquarium and the decoration of the Sagrada Familia tube station, also in Barcelona.
