What is hierbas ibicencas?
This is a traditional spirit that families have been preparing at their country houses for generations, especially on the eastern and northern side of the island. Their digestive properties mean that this spirit is the perfect way to round off your lunch, especially if it was a copious affair.
This spirit, with its amber colour and aniseed aroma, comes from extracting the aroma of several plants found in Ibiza’s countryside, including fennel, thyme, rosemary, lemon verbena, lavender, rue, eucalyptus, chamomile, juniper, oregano, mint, lavender-leaved sun rose and sage, as well as the leaves and peel of orange and lemon, star anise or badiam and green anise. Not all Hierbas Ibicencas taste the same, as each family or business has its own recipe, with its unique combination of aromatic plants that is guarded as if it were a state secret.
Where can I try the hierbas ibicencas?
It’s very easy to taste a cold glass of hierbas, as they are usually served at the beach bars and restaurants in Ibiza. In fact, they are often offered “on the house” at the end of the meal. We suggest you try the ones served at Casa Anita, a charming restaurant that is only 5 kilometres away from Hotel Ánfora Ibiza. And if you are exploring the northern part of the island, you could stop at the Can Xicu bar, in Sant Miquel, that competes with Casa Anita for the best hierbas on the island. And of course, you can also relish an aromatic glass of hierbas ibicencas at Hotel Ánfora Ibiza, either at the pool bar, on the terrace or in our lounge, where our staff will be delighted to serve it. But, wherever you try them, don’t forget that its alcohol content is 24 to 38%, so don’t be fooled by its sweetness!
