Santa Eulária in may: Festivities, theatre, beaches and more

May is one of those months in which Santa Eulària des Riu shines the limelight on its traditions and character. The ideal time to explore it from another angle: that of its local fiestas, family-centred proposals and cultural activities that fill up the local calendar.
In May, Santa Eulària starts its traditional festivities with the First Sunday in May celebrations and ends them with the Barruguet Festival of Family Theatre, acting as bookends of a period to enjoy the start of the holiday season on beaches and coves, beach bars reopening, bike touring, flea markets and quaint villages.
Local fiestas on the First Sunday in May
This is the big traditional event thrown by Santa Eulària des Riu. These local fiestas are deeply rooted in the local life and declared Fiesta of Cultural Interest. Every year, the Town Council prepares a programme with over 80 cultural, sports and family proposals that start late April and keep going until the end of May.
The main festivities are during the weekend of the first Sunday in May, reserved to the traditional acts: the parade of horses and decked-out carts, the folk dance called ball pagès, the solemn mass in Puig de Missa and the procession for the Virgen del Rosario, as well as exhibitions of Ibizan hounds, flower arrangements and classic cars. On the eve, Santa Eulària comes to life with concerts and shows in its main square, the Plaza de España.

May outdoors: between spring and summer
Ibiza in May is already buzzing with the summer mood. The pleasant temperatures are not only great for hikes and bike tours, but also for stretching out your towel on the sand and kicking off the beach season with the first swim of the year in the Med. Es Canar, Cala Nova, Cala Llenya, Cala Llonga, Santa Eulària, Cala Pada, Es Figueral… If you feel like exploring, there’s a different beach for every day of your stay on the island! And don’t forget the water sports available on those beaches, like snorkelling, diving, paddleboarding, kayaking...
Santa Eulària and Es Canar (home to our hotel) are a fantastic starting point to combine culture and nature in a day given the heritage and routes that connect it, like the Cultural Route you can do by car, motorbike or bike. And of course, there’s more visits you mustn’t miss during your holidays in Ibiza, like the flea markets of Las Dalias and Punta Arabí (both open during these dates) and the villages of Santa Gertrudis and Sant Carles.

Barruguet Festival: an event for families
The last weekend of May is marked by another big event in this town: the Barruget Festival of Family Theatre, a wonderful performing arts event to be shared by children and adults together. The festival programme gathers different national and international theatre companies who offer about twenty performances including plays, dance, music, mimes and circus shows, some of them free street performances and others in the town’s cultural venues with very cheap tickets.
Most shows have a strong focus on body-language and are therefore easily understood by everyone, whatever their language, so don’t worry about the language barrier if you don’t speak Spanish or Catalan.
